Aleppo soap, known in Arabic as “sapun ghar”, or “laurel oil soap” is made from the best olive oil and enriched with the oil from laurel berries and leaves. It is used as a results-producing basic curd soap, and to excellent effect as a fine soap for personal care.

Aleppo, the biblical Helbon located in modern Syria, is the Arab birthplace for the art of producing soap from vegetable oils. From the soap works in and around Aleppo, only a few still use the traditional process handed down by generations of soap makers. One of this traditional firms produces these skin friendly soaps. They can be used daily as soaps for washing and shampooing and are known for enfolding their beneficial effects in hand, body and facial care. The soaps are based on olive oil from the first cold pressing which is then gently saponified at 95 °C. The thick liquid soap is poured over a large sheet of waxed paper on the floor of the manufactory. The large, green, flat mass is allowed to cool down and harden for about a day. The whole mass is cut into individual cubes then, and each cube is stamped with the soap artisan's name or signet. The cubes of soap are then stacked with room to spare to allow maximum air exposure. Once they have dried sufficiently, they are put into a subterranean chamber to be aged for six months to a year. While it is ageing, the free alkaline content of the soap breaks down upon slow reaction with air; the moisture content of the soap is also reduced, making the soap hard and long lasting. This ageing process turns the colour of the soap to a pale gold. +/1 250gr
